Controlling Magneto-Optical Rotation via Atomic Coherences

چکیده
An isotropic medium, having magnetic sublevels, when subjected to a magnetic field or an electromagnetic field can induce anisotropy in the medium; and as a result the plane of polarization of the probe field can rotate. Therefore the rotation due to the magnetic field alone, can be controlled efficiently with use of a coherent field. We show, using a control field, significant enhancement of the magnetooptical rotation and demonstrate the possibility of realizing magneto-optical switch.

Nonlinear polarization rotation of a Gaussian pulse propagating through an EIT medium
We study numerically the nonlinear magneto-optical rotation of polarization (NMOR) of the laser pulse during its propagation through a cold Rb cloud with induced Zeeman coherences and electromagnetically induced transparency. Evolution of NMOR is calculated by solving the Maxwell–Bloch equations. We consider a linearly polarized Gaussian pulse with different pulse peak amplitudes and widths. Fo...

Optical pumping of an atomic sample with narrow-band light can create sub-Doppler features, known as Bennett structures, in the velocity distribution of state populations. In the presence of static magnetic or electric fields, the corresponding sub-Doppler features in the index of refraction can cause nonlinear optical rotation and induced ellipticity of resonant light propagating through the a...

A self-oscillating magnetometer based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation using amplitude-modulated pump light and unmodulated probe light (AM-NMOR) in Rb has been constructed and tested towards a goal of airborne detection of 87 magnetic anomalies. In AM-NMOR, stroboscopic optical pumping via amplitude modulation of the pump beam creates alignment of the ground electronic state of the rubidi...
متن کاملChopped nonlinear magneto-optic rotation: A technique for precision measurements
We have developed a technique for precise measurement of small magnetic fields using nonlinear magneto-optic rotation (NMOR). The technique relies on the resonant laser beam being chopped. During the on time, the atoms are optically pumped into an aligned ground state (Δm= 2 coherence). During the off time, they freely precess around the magnetic field at the Larmor frequency. If the on-off mod...
